Hey Oppo...as some of you may recall, I had my gas tank replaced back in March be
cause of rust.
All has been well, but pretty much EVERY time I fill up at any gas station, the fuel filler starts to overflow gas even before the pump has clicked off to tell me the tank is full. It usually ‘burps’ gas out for 5-10 seconds after it overflows, which, of course runs down the side of my car and all over the ground, making a mess.
This is clearly not normal as it didn’t do this before the tank was replaced...
The garage claims the only thing they changed was the tank and all my other components are the same. Maybe so, but that doesn’t change the fact this is happening now and never had happened before...and it’s a bit stupid to not be able to fill my brand new gas tank to full because it overflows...
Does anybody have any idea what might be going on here? Some issue with a pinched EVAP hose or a bad EVAP canister or...? I don’t know enough about the fuel venting/EVAP, etc system to really diagnose on my own, so hoping somebody here might have some thoughts.
There are no check engine lights and the car seems to run fine. I don’t notice any leaks when the car is parked or anything, it just simply overflows when I fill it before the pump even clicks off normally. Filling the car works normally otherwise...it’s not a situation where the pump clicks off constantly.
So either it’s overflowing before the pump would NORMALLY click off, so it never does....or the system that CAUSES the pump to click off isn’t working so I overfill it...?
Cheers for any suggestions or info!:)

There should be second vent tube coming off the tank that,”breaths” back into the fuel inlet. This may have been damaged during the repair or has a bad check valve.(if equipt)

The fuel filler shutoff is related to the pump nozzle itself.

If we can assume all other components on your vehicle are stock or appropriate OEM replacements and the work performed was done correctly, I would wonder if you’re filling up at a different station? Maybe the hardware at that station is faulty? Certainly unlikely but you gotta wonder.

Several various stations, yes, but all the same stations/pumps
I had filled up at
BEFORE I had the tank replaced and never had issues at any of tho
se same
stations and pumps prior to the tank replacement.

This sound a whole lot a ‘you have to pay them to drop the entire tank again’ situation...

Yes, the issue i s most probably related to that part if the evap system has not been touched .
Having a clogged evap hose would make the engine run bad at some point like a bad fuel pump (making it harder to suck gas, like trying to breathe in a plastic bottle) or release gas vapors on the engine bay ; in that case it might also not run very well (had that issue with a cracked hose between the canister and the tank on my A3 and it was “misfiring” a little at idle) as there is a leak on the intake when out of boost (there is a c heck valve before s o it’s not operating when in boost).

It SEEMS to run fine, just how I remember it running? Maybe a LITTLE down on power, but that could be in my head, and if not, could just be because it is due for a change of spark plugs....

If humdrum edges closer to retirement maybe its not worth it

My 71 Nova did this, but that’s because it was a piece of GM pig iron.........

I might see if I just angle the hose
handle so more air can go down the filler neck whether it still does it or not...

This is a thin piece of Korean tinfoil...but I love it anyway :P

Or see if filling it slowly makes any difference
